Laguna Beach Unified School District

Leaders in the Laguna Beach Unified School District put student relationships at the forefront of their systems. From its instructional design framework to the student dashboard, LBUSD is in the process of developing a student-story dashboard.

Faced with the challenge that no existing systems fully supported the district's learning model and the district's focus on relationships, the team decided to build out its own dashboard: one go-to space for educators. The dashboard is a system that showcases not just student learning, but also student strengths, interests, and aspirations. By centering student voices and experiences - as well as highlighting those of their caregivers - the dashboard enables teachers to implement their learning model in a way that responds to the personalized needs of students. It builds on the regular goal-setting work already done at the elementary and secondary levels.

Additionally, these notes and quotes help teachers connect with their students and build deeper relationships, which can be difficult at the secondary level when teachers serve upwards of 120 students. In its ideal implementation, it will help attune teachers to notice students in important ways, demonstrating to students that they matter and that their teachers have time for them. The districts' MTSS team structure is the current launching point for leveraging the dashboard, with the goal that it becomes part of the intentional support system for all students at the Tier 1 level.

The results of this intentionality can be seen during district reflective learning walks. At the end of the day, the dashboard will be a system that supports teachers in designing units of study that connect with students' passions and help support their wellbeing, engagement, and belonging. This dashboard marks a transformation in the district's journey as its educators reimagines how learning and growth are captured over time. LBUSD is proud to provide a holistic education so that students can create the best possible path for their future.
