Aligning Leadership and the Learner Profile
National School District is on a leadership journey to integrate its learner profile with its community schools efforts. They are working hard to ensure that leaders are aligned in their efforts to enhance learning for the entire school community.
At the start of the year, each principal writes three goals in their leadership dashboard, identifying systems, actions, and metrics to address academic achievement, student engagement, and culture and climate. But these goals don't just live in cyberspace; they are grounded in the everyday work happening at each of our school sites, ensuring they reflect the real needs and experiences of our communities.
In addition to being used in meetings with the superintendent, leaders collaborate in groups of four every other week to discuss and reflect on their progress. Using the dashboard in community as a grounding document to bring together the district's efforts around its learner profile, MTSS efforts, and community schools implementation creates space for aligned ideas to be generated and shared across schools.
The result is meaningful communication about the learner profile in parent newsletters, "cafecitos" with families, sensemaking with students, and culturally-relevant Read Across America activities with books that reflect the students who live in National City.
This independent yet collaborative process mirrors the teacher professional learning framework used by the district.
